WWII in HD is the first-ever World War II documentary presented in full, immersive HD color. Culled from thousands of
hours of lost and rare color archival footage gathered from a worldwide search through basements and archives, WWII in
HD will change the way the world sees this defining conflict. Using footage never before seen by most Americans--converted
to HD for unprecedented clarity--viewers will experience the war as if they were actually there, surrounded by the real
sights and sounds of the battlefields. Along the way they'll meet a diverse group of soldiers whose wartime diaries and
journals show in visceral detail what the war was really like.

This visually astonishing landmark series presents the story of World War II through the eyes of 12 Americans who experienced
the war firsthand. Viewers will hear the story of Army nurse June Wandrey, who served from the beginning of the war in
North Africa to the liberation of the camps in Germany. They will meet Shelby Westbrook, a young African American from
Toledo, who became a member of the famed Tuskegee Airmen; Jimmie Kanaya, the son of Japanese immigrants, who served in
the U.S. Army and was imprisoned in Europe; and Jack Werner, a Jewish migr who escaped from Austria before the war and
wound up fighting not against Hitler and the hated Nazis, but in the Pacific Theater.

Every year in the run up to Christmas, millions of birds are killed for yuletide dinner tables. In a huge national mass cull that begins in November and has a deadline of December 25th, more than 10 million turkeys and nearly half a million geese are slaughtered. Many of these will come from huge factory farms working intensely for this time of year. Julia Bradbury examines our attitude to Christmas meat - where it comes from, how it is raised, how it gets to your plate and the history around our eating choices. In a specially constructed restaurant-cum-studio built around a poultry abattoir unit, invited guests watch as the birds are brought in for killing. They are stunned, bled, de-feathered and gutted before their eyes by experienced professional slaughtermen. The birds are then butchered and part of their flesh is cooked and eaten in the studio by the audience. Eight geese and turkeys are brought for slaughter from farms in Lancashire and Essex. The slaughter process continues as normal and each of the birds is checked by an inspector from the meat hygiene service, while a leading veterinary surgeon gives a running commentary of events. The audience participates by eating some of the cooked poultry and discussing their attitudes to the trade in mass produced birds versus those from smaller farms.

Set against the backdrop of the Highland estate of Balavil, the hunts take us into the little understood world of wild game hunting, part of a no-holds-barred exploration of the issues surrounding the killing and cooking of wild animals for our pleasure and for food. For many, deer stalking is the pinnacle of hunting for sport, but venison is an increasingly popular meat, with the line between hunting for pleasure and shooting for food somewhat blurred. The contributors are trained in rifle shooting and taken out on stalks to see how close they can get to a deer before lining the animal up in their sights and squeezing the trigger. Once a stag is killed, it needs to have its guts removed quickly before being taken off the moor and down to be skinned and the carcass butchered for cooking.

The nine novice hunters go back to basics, bypass the supermarkets and go out to the Highlands to kill, cook and eat wild duck. They face an intensive gun training session before heading to the ponds to shoot mallard at dusk. Can they deal with the prospect of shooting, plucking and butchering wild animals and do they have the stomach to eat the ducks they might eventually kill?

S01E07 Hunters and Hunted
Mammals' ability to learn new tricks is the key to survival in the knife-edge world of hunters and hunted. In a TV first, a killer whale off the Falklands does something unique: it sneaks into a pool where elephant seal pups learn to swim and snatches them, saving itself the trouble of hunting in the open sea. Slow-motion cameras reveal the star-nosed mole's newly-discovered technique for smelling prey underwater: it exhales then inhales a bubble of air ten times per second. Young ibex soon learn the only way to escape a fox - run up an almost vertical cliff face - and young stoats fight mock battles, learning the skills that make them one of the world's most efficient predators.
